It was really important to me to make sure Hale had a solid reasoning for hunting vampires. Even with that, he spends a lot of time trying to justify it to himself. So I'd put him as fairly reluctant. It's mostly because he knows that if he isn't out there, people die. I really wanted Hale to feel like a real person, and that includes the chronic pain.
