I have spent the last few days doing two of my least favourite things. Taxes and deep cleaning. At least I got an early start on the taxes for once.
I’m still chipping away at new stories but in the meantime, I thought it would be fun to share some character profiles instead of the same blurbs you’ve seen a dozen times.
Meet Fairuz Arshad
Fairuz Arshad is the newest addition to the Toronto Police’s Special Crimes Division, which handles the city’s strangest paranormal crimes. After three years of handling homicide cases, she’d decided it was time for a change of pace. Unfortunately, her background makes her the perfect person to handle all the ‘weird body cases’.
Despite her love of charmed jewelry and fine fashion, Fairuz is a little rough around the edges. She isn’t exactly the best when it comes to impulse control either. In fact, between her and her partner, she’s the one most likely to run head-first into a problem. Her preferred strategy is to figure it out when we get there. Though, with her barriers protecting her, she can handle it a little better than most people.
What she lacks in impulse control, she more than makes up for in loyalty and determination. When her loved ones are threatened, there’s nothing she won’t do to make sure they’re safe. She holds her responsibility to protect people who can’t protect themselves above everything else, even to the point of butting heads with her bosses.
Fairuz was a very interesting character to write. I surprised myself with how much fashion research I did for her. One of my favourite resources and inspirations was actually my mom, who is always the best-dressed person in the room. She could tell you what everyone at a conference had been wearing, brand names, and even sometimes whether someone’s jewelry is real or imitation. Especially since Fairuz is a detective, I found myself thinking, “What would Mom notice here?” while I was writing. It was a nice little way to do some character development and spend some time learning about something she really loves.
If you’ve already read the series, I’d love to know what you think! I’ve always planned on returning to this series and universe if it’s something people would be interested in.
